Devil You Know: Chapter Eleven

Caela got back upstairs in time to hear Sam yelling into his phone.

“I don’t care what protocol is, George. This is my family we’re talking about here. No one is going to know it came from you, because no one is going to know we have it. Just send it. Thank you.”

Sam’s phone clattered onto the kitchen counter and he shoved his mug into the coffee machine hard enough to move it back slightly. A pod was slammed into the holder and he jabbed at the buttons to get the coffee brewing.

“You break it, you bought it,” Caela teased as she leaned against the door frame.

Sam jumped, then closed his eyes and let out a breath. “Goddammit, you scared the snot out of me. I must’ve been too busy yelling at Clark to hear you come in.”

“Something like that, yeah. What’s going on?”

“George said they have the cell dumps and tracking for Simon’s phone, so we’ll know if he was near Mykos when…yeah. Anyway, he wasn’t going to share it, but now he is.”

“Come on, Seymour wouldn’t be stupid enough to have his cell phone on him.”

“Not his regular phone, no. But they found the burner phone Atkins was using and there was a number for Simon and one for you, and two others they haven’t identified yet. They also found the guard who was passing shit to Atkins and that idiot is now in a cell all his own, awaiting arraignment.”

“Have you spoken to Stephan yet, today? I left him a voicemail, but nothing yet. Doesn’t he usually get up around now?”

“Yeah, he does, but he’s asked for a few days leave. He wants to stay at the hospital and keep an eye on Mykos until he’s out of ICU and can be more secure in a private room. His family threatened to fly out here and he said he’d personally be watching Myk, so he has to keep his word.”

“He’s mad at me?” Caela asked.

“No, he’s pissed at Myk for going out alone, and pissed at himself for being asleep when he could’ve been there with him. All the usual survivor guilt things. One of my cop friends has a brother who works on that floor. He’s going to let Stephan crash in the on-call room for a couple of days until Myk is out of ICU.”

“That’s good. I’ll make sure he has food, fresh clothes, and stuff.”

“I had a feeling you would. He’ll be fine, Caela. Stephan isn’t upset with you at all. He knows this isn’t on you.”

Caela moved past Sam towards the office and set the flowers down in the middle of the table, then stacked the rest of her armload beside a chair and dropped into it. “Can you bring me one of those?” she called out to Sam.

“What, a cup of coffee? Or the donut I just snuck out of the box on the counter?”

“Both. And you better have not eaten my blueberry filled one.”

“No, this one is Boston cream.
